Wednesday August 17.
Zernoseky to Melnik via Terezin. 62km. Total distance 1645km.
Spent some time cleaning the bike chains in the morning, then headed off to a coffee shop about 8km down the road. What a fantastic little place - set in an old railway station, and the girls running it were a delight. Dermot thought he did well chatting them up!
Almost made up for last night's dinner.
Then we took a detour to Terezin - a place where thousands of Jews were transported to.
First we came across this site - a place where in Nov 1944, the ashes o 22,000 Jewish victims from the Terezin Ghetto were ordered by the Nazis to be thrown into the river:
Then we checked out the museum in Terezin. Unbelievable what humans can do! A very sobering visit that put the spirits down for a while.
Fortunately the journey continued along beautiful paths and vistas - we think bucolic needs re-calibrating.
Ended up in a town of about 25,000 - Melnik, at the confluence of the Elbe and Vltava rivers. High up on the hilltop of the town was a church and a castle. Beers on the balcony of the castle - you couldn't get a place nicer.
