The Danube Delta

Friday Sept 23
The Danube Delta

We headed off on a boat trip on the Delta today.  It's a huge UNESCO listed reserve with loads of birds and fish.  A maze of channels and islands with a huge amount of water entering the sea.  The Danube divides into 3 main channels in the Delta, then there are heaps of little passages in between.

We stopped at a fishing village out in the delta for a break.  The only way to get there is by boat.

Some more of the beautiful waterways

After the boat trip we spent some time trying to find a bus or train back to Constanta as weren't really keen to be on that road again.  Buses are all too small and the train leaves at 5.30am!  Spoke to a taxi driver and he's taking us in his car for 100 Euro.  At least we'll be alive.

Spirits are starting to get a bit low.  Bulgaria will be challenging as we can't even read the language - it's a bit like Russian.  And getting bikes onto buses and trains is always causing a problem.  We've been on the road for about 10 weeks, and it's getting hard to keep going knowing that we could be riding on some horrible roads - it's really the fear of the unknown, and 4 months is probably a bit too long.

We'll head south from Constanta tomorrow into Bulgaria and then through into Turkey.  This was the section we were hoping to do by boat.
