Santorini

Santorini
October 26 - 28

We got picked up from the port by our hotel when we arrived.  They charged us 15 euro though which I think was a ripoff.  The hotel is pretty ordinary too.  All they want to do is make money out of us - offering scooter hire, island tours etc.

We did our own thing, and hired a 150cc scooter for the 3 days from a really nice guy at scooterdonkey.  He recommended a place to head to for the sunset so off we went. Got there a fraction late though.

Our first morning

Next day we headed to see the ancient city of Akrotiri - the town was buried by a volcanic eruption in about 1500 BC and has evidence of civilisation from 5000 years ago.

Then explored a few of the sites on the southern end of the island.
The red beach

Grape vines

They don't trellis the vines cos it's too windy

Then there was the obligatory sunset viewing out at Oia

Yesterday we'd found a really nice coffee shop, so we headed back there for breakfast on our 2nd day.  While we were there, saw donkeys being used as the only way to get building materials up the hill.

We explored Pyrgos then headed to Perissa to climb the hill up to the ancient city of Thira, another place several 1000 years BC.

The track up
A panorama shot that cut out a bit of Dermot - he isn't really fading away!

You can just make out the bird on the right and the lion on the left carved into these rocks

The ancient amphitheatre
Our last day on Santorini we had to be at the ferry at 3, so didn't venture too far.  Went for a walk along the caldera from Fira to Imerovigli and out to Skaros rock.

Here's a view from the ferry of Skaros rock.

And a few more pictures from the ferry.
The long winding road up from the port
The northern tip at Oia where we'd watched the sunset a few nights earlier
A 2 hour ferry trip to our final destination - Naxos.
